Step-by-Step Homework Solutions in Algebra? Is that considered Tutoring?

I get this question all the time, mainly from curious people interested in what I do. They tell me that I really am not helping Algebra students since I am giving them all the answers. Some of my friends say that If you don't put the time and sit in front of a book for hours, you simply will not learn.

Let me ask you something....How does a professor teach a math class? They would simply solve problems step-by-step on the board. The professor shows you how he or she would solve an Algebra problem and this is how you learn. The math book for example, "Intermediate Algebra" will have a similar approach. The textbook will give you step-by-step examples and this is how you learn.

The problem is that most of the time the professor and the textbook is not enough. Maybe you don't understand the teacher, have a hard time paying attention because you have Algebra class right after work, the book is confusing, or the real reason...MATH IS NOT EASY.

This is an interesting Homework question for me since I have not seen the question asked this way, take note since it sounds like a tricky Algebra TEST QUESTION!

To solve this homework problem, you have to know what they mean by the term "roots". In this particular problem if you plug ( - 1) or ( 7 ) into the equation for x, you will get ZERO.

In other words:

(x + 1) = 0 or x = - 1

(x - 7) = 0 or x = 7

The easiest way to solve this problem is by multiplying the roots

(x + 1) * (x – 7)

Multiply out the equation above using the foil method

x * x + x * ( - 7) + 1 * x + ( - 7) * 1

x^2 – 7x + x – 7

combine like terms, in this particular problem they are ( -7x), x

x^2 – 7x + x – 7

x^2 – 6x - 7

Going back to the question, x^2+kx-7=0, the k must be?

K = - 6

Here is a frequent question Algebra students ask about.

What is 5.5% of 355?

You need to use a proportion to solve these Homework problems. I think of proportions like the following formula.

if this equals----- then this equals
-------------- = ----------------------
that --------------------that

The problem says if the total amount or 100% is equal to 355.... what is part of the total amount or 5.5%?

set up the proportion:


total amount ----------part of the total amount
------------------- = ---------------------------
total percentage --------percentage of the part

355 ------------------X
-------------- = -------------
100 -----------------5.5

solve for x and you are done.
The trick to these Algebra problems is understanding that a proportion is needed. Also have in mind that out of the 4 numbers involved in a proportion, the problem is going to give you 3 and ask for the missing one.

What frustrates me about Homework

I remember those long nights when I really tried to study. I shut my phone off and went to the quietest corner of the library. After at least four hours I finished my homework. I understood everything perfectly and it made since because I spent so much time studying. When I got to school I found out that some people found the homework quite easy. Some said it only took them about 30 minutes. To get to the point I found out that I was doing the problems the hard way. I was so frustrated when I found out that there is a faster and easier way to do the homework.
